FAQ's About Peacemaker Training

Q.) What happened to the five levels of Peacemaker Training?

A.) We no longer refer to Peacemaker Training as Levels 1 - 5.  Instead, Peacemaker Training includes two major categories: Foundational Skills Training and Advanced Training.

Attending a Peacemaker Seminar or completing the Personal PeacePack (referred to as Level 1) and listening to or attending a Peacemaker Church Seminar or completing the Leaders' PeacePack (Level 2), are no longer prerequisites to attend other trainings.  Instead, participants in the Foundational Skills Training are expected to have read The Peacemaker and completed the Small Group Study or the Personal Peacemaking Self-Application Study (provided upon registering for training) before they arrive at the training.

What was previously called Level 3 (Conflict Coaching) and Level 4 (Mediation) is now called Foundational Skills Training.  What was previously called Level 5 (Certification Training and Advanced Training) is now referred to as the Advanced Training.  Click here to see the chart and explanation of Advanced Training.

Q.) How are Conflict Coaching, Mediation, and Certification Training different?

A.) In Conflict Coaching, you learn to counsel and guide another person through conflict in the home, church, or workplace.
In Mediation, you learn the basics of mediating informal and simple conflicts between others in the home, church or workplace.
In Certification, you learn to  mediate more difficult matters, fashioning the appropriate process, and transitioning to the issuance of an arbitration decision on singular issues within  family, church, business, and legal conflicts.

Q.) Do I need to complete the Small Group Study and read The Peacemaker before I can register for Conflict Coaching or Mediation?

A.) Yes.  The prerequisite to register for Foundational Skills Training is to read The Peacemaker, complete the Small Group Study or the Personal Peacemaking Self-Application Study, and finish any other pre-course homework before arriving at the training.

Q.) Do I have to attend the Conflict Coaching Training before I attend the Mediation Training?

A.) Yes

Q.) Is there any pre-requisite reading before attending a training event?

Yes - you will need to read The Peacemaker by Ken Sande before you attend the Foundational Skills Training (Conflict Coaching and Mediation). You will need to read Instruments in the Redeemer's Hand by Paul David Tripp before you attend the Certification Training

Q.) Do I have to complete the Conflict Coaching & Mediation Training before I take the Certification Training or any of the Advanced Training events?

A.) Yes.

Q.) Do I have to take Certification Training before I attend one of the Advanced Training events?

A.) Although Certification Training is not a prerequisite, completion is encouraged before attending Reconciling Marital Conflict, Case Administration, Walking Redemptively Through Divorce, or Teaching Peacemaking Cross-Culturally. Certification Training is a prerequisite for the Reconciling Church Conflict and Formal Arbitration events.

Q.)  If I am only part way through Levels 1 - 4, do I have to start over again?

A.)  No.  If you have not taken Conflict Coaching, simply register for Conflict Coaching. If you have not completed Mediation, simply register for Mediation Training. Remember you must complete Conflict Coaching before attending Mediation Training.

Q.) I am very interested in peacemaking and want to be trained to be a peacemaker.  Where do I start?

A.) Register to attend Conflict Coaching and Mediation Training.  Read The Peacemaker and complete the Small Group Study or Personal Peacemaking Self-Application Study and any other assigned homework for the course before attending the training event.

Q.)  How do I register for the Training?

A.) View the Calendar of Events and click on the particular event for which you would like to register.

Q.) Why does Peacemaker Ministries charge for its training?

A.) Peacemaker Ministries tries to keep its training fees as low as possible.  We charge fees based upon Peacemaker Ministries' costs to write and produce the materials, train and provide qualified instructors, and to administer the events.

Q.) Can you provide the Conflict Coaching and Mediation Training at my church?

A.) We select locations for our training on a regional basis to make it as accessible as possible for the maximum number of people.  We also require a minimum of 35 people per Conflict Coaching Training and 24 people per Mediation Training to make it economical to provide the training at the current event fee.  If you are interested in hosting an event, contact our Event Coordinator at training@peacemaker.net or at 406-256-1583 ext. 23. For more information, click here.

Q.) Are there any required time constraints for completing subsequent training?

A.) You should complete the Mediation Training within two years of completing the Conflict Coaching training. This is not a hard and fast rule -- it is just recommended.

After you have completed the Mediation Training, you are eligible to apply to the Certification Program. If the time between the Mediation Training and applying for certification is five years or more, you are required to complete the Foundational Skills training again.

When you apply to the Certification Program (and if you are accepted), you will have one year to enroll. At the time of enrollment, we assign you a supervisor for your practical experience casework. Once you enroll, you have three years to complete your practical experience.

Q.) Once certified, are there continuing education or similar requirements for maintaining my certification?

A.) There are annual education and conciliation case requirements to maintain your certification. Currently, the requirements are two cases that involve a minimum of 20 hours total, and 10 hours of advanced training.  Advanced Training courses and workshops are offered at the annual Peacemaker Conference.  Many conference workshops are available for purchase through MP3 download or on CD. There is also a $100 annual compliance fee.  For further information regarding Certification Program, click here

Q.)  Should I take your training and open a Christian Conciliation service to help Christians and churches in my area?

A.)  We encourage and recommend Peacemaking Teams, which are affiliated with and under the supervision of a local church.  Although some individuals may provide conciliation services through an independent service or business, we recommend that all such conciliation services always seek to involve the local church of the parties, with their agreement to do so.

Although there are situations where a conciliation service outside of the local church is necessary (e.g., due to the lack of a local church supporting such a service), we believe the local church has been given the responsibility of supporting a culture of peace and providing the ministry of peacemaking.  An independent conciliation service, however, can encourage local churches to build a culture of peace, assist local churches in need of help with conflicts, and provide guidance to Peacemaking Teams which may need assistance.  See the Peacemaking Church section of the website for more information on this subject.

Q.) How can I bring an training event to my area?

Hosting an event is a great step toward building a culture of peace in your organization or church. We look forward to partnering with you and exploring how we can bring peacemaker training to your group, church, or community.
